Scholarships & Financial Aid

Pipestone School of Music, the educational branch of Cascadia, is fortunate to have a large endowment through the Christine Cherrington Memorial Scholarship fund to provide both merit scholarships and financial aid. We believe cost should never be a barrier to music education, and encourage all students to apply for these opportunities.

Financial Aid for Private Lessons

All students 18 and under studying with Pipestone Faculty, or a teacher remotely who meets our standards, are eligible for financial aide for private lessons. Financial aid is awarded for a full year of lessons, and asks that students maintain a consistent lesson and practice schedule. For an application, or more information about scholarships for remote lessons, please email cascadiamusiceducation@gmail.com. Applications for the year are accepted until September 8th, 2023.

Zoe Kaltenbach wins Cascadia Music’s Cherrington Memorial Scholarship Competition

This year, Cascadia Music’s Cherrington Memorial Scholarship Competition highlighted the accomplishments of 5 talented young musicians. After serious deliberation, judges Marcy Stamper, Steven Kisch and Michael Brady chose Zoe Kaltenbach as the first place winner. Zoe, 16 years old, studies violin with Pam Hunt. She played La Folia by Arcangelo Corelli, arranged by Suzuki. “I really enjoy how different each section is,” Zoe said of her piece, “Some are very slow and legato, and sound sad, while others are extremely fast and technical.” In addition to the $300 cash prize, Zoe will be featured in Cascadia’s Spring Concert on May 13th, 2023 at the Methow Valley Community Center.

The other winners were:

Tied for 2nd ($150 prize): Wylie Smith, age 13, violin and viola, & Sisu Clark, age 12, cello. Both musicians study with Pam Hunt.

Tied for 3rd ($100 prize): Freya Whipple, age 12, violin, & Orlo Parkinson, age 13, piano. Freya studies with Pam Hunt, and Orlo studies with Mike Kamansky.

The Cherrington Memorial Merit Scholarship is awarded to the outstanding music student of the school year determined by a live performance or (since Covid) a video audition, and has been awarded annually since 2013. Thank you to our volunteer judges, dedicated teachers, and wonderful young musicians.
